Small tablecloth covered table, a few chairs, full size fridge, counter top convection/toaster oven, coffee maker and electric tea kettle. We used to have a microwave but we removed it about 6 months ago.&lt;br /&gt;We had heard and read research about the &lt;a href="http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/05/18/microwave-hazards.aspx"&gt;health hazards to using the microwave&lt;/a&gt;  and were convinced that it should be removed but the time would go by and there it sat.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Side note, I work best with deadlines and when I am under a bit of pressure. So the pressure to remove the microwave came in the form of our annual fire inspection. The fire inspector told me that I need the microwave plugged directly into the wall not into a power strip because it could cause a fire. He would be back in 10 days to see if I made the changes and then sign off that the office is compliant. Needless to say the microwave "left the building" that afternoon.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Joya brings a balanced and nutritious lunch each day. If you are one of her patients and she advises you of the best balance for your meals be assured that she practices what she preaches. Most days Marylou Gantner sits across the table from Joya and they share a laugh over lunch. Marylou prepares great food that looks beautiful because she mixes colors of veggies and serves her lunch up in lovely dishes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This past week Heather Crider brought in some pureed butternut squash and shared it with me. I've asked her to share the recipe in a blog post sometime soon because she said it is a very easy recipe done in the oven and I can attest to the fact that it was delicious.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lunchtime for me usually consists of a meal size salad of greens, some type of protein, and some cut up veggies. This is most efficient lunch for me because it is all in one dish, transports easily and if I want to sit in my office and read emails instead of being in the kitchen I don't have anything to spill. Do you have long, gut busting laughs?  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;If so, your heart thanks you.  According to a new study through the University of Maryland, "laughter, along with an active sense of humor, may help protect you against a heart attack."  People with heart disease are 40% less likely to laugh in a variety of situations compared to others the same age without disease. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Michael Miller, M.D., is the director for the Center for Preventive Cardiology at the University of Maryland Medical Center.  He says they don't understand yet why laughter protects, but they do understand that stress, hostility, and negative feelings have a damaging effect on the lining of the veins and arteries.  Atherosclerosis, begins as inflammation and damage to the arteries that leads to deposits of fat and cholesterol.  &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The study compared how 300 people answered humor responses.  Half of the people asked to participate had already suffered a heart attack or had coronary artery disease.  The other half did not have heart disease.  The questionnaires asked how much or little people laughed in certain situations and the second one used true or false answers to measure anger and hostility.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Dr. Miller found that those with heart disease found less humor in everyday situations than those who did not.  They were generally more angry and hostile and laughed less even in positive situations.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;A popular inflammatory marker is CRP, or C-reactive protein.  This is a blood test that measures general inflammation in the body.  Marsland, in a study of 855 middle-aged subjects showed that hostile affect was independently associated with increased CRP levels (Antagonistic characteristics are positively associated with inflammatory markers independently of trait negative emotionality).&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Naturopathy also offers a variety of herbs to help reduce inflammation in association with laughter.  &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Orlando has a wonderful comedy club named SAK, that our office had the pleasure of visiting on Friday.  We laughed and laughed, and then laughed some more!  They were superb! This is an experience that many of us have had as we attempt to improve ourselves and keep our body at a healthy weight. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Health experts as well as our moms have shared the advice needed to give us a healthy life. The following is just a short list of the ideas I have heard and read lately.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Mini goals are easier to achieve and will help me reach my ultimate goal.&lt;/strong&gt; By congratulating myself as I make even the smallest changes allows me to feel accomplished and gives me the energy needed to continue. So I look at the big picture, having the ultimate goal in mind, but breaking it down to achievable actions.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Journal and Track. Connecting  food to energy and mood.&lt;/strong&gt; There is a corresponding positive result when I keep track of what I'm eating and how it makes me feel. Some nutritional counselors claim that a person who keeps track of what they eat and how it makes them feel can lose twice as much weight as a person who doesn't take the time to jot it down. For that result I'm certainly willing to write it down and I even found some neat &lt;a href="http://www.apple.com/iphone/apps-for-iphone/"&gt;iphone Apps&lt;/a&gt; to help me do this.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Pay attention to my food while eating.&lt;/strong&gt; This seems like a "no brainer" but this is one thing that gets many people into trouble. Eating while on the computer or while watching television contributes to me losing track of what and how much I am actually consuming.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Flavor my foods with spices and herbs.&lt;/strong&gt; Monitoring my calorie intake doesn't need to mean boring foods. I experiment with the flavors I enjoy while leaving out the "bad for me" calories. Recipes for low calorie dips and salad dressing can add a lot of flavor to meals.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Lift it and Move it.&lt;/strong&gt; The more muscle mass I have the more calories I will burn even while sleeping. Strength training even just a couple times a week can make a big difference in my metabolism's ability to burn calories. When I add some type of aerobic fun to my week I can certainly burn some calories and help my heart.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Set time to rest and relax.&lt;/strong&gt; Stress hormones have been tied to weight gain. Planning times to do things for myself like reading, gardening or taking a stroll to clear my head can help me keep my stress hormones at a proper level.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Sleep.&lt;/strong&gt; Getting enough sleep is vitally important to keeping my appetite controlling hormones in check. It isn't really possible to completely avoid people who      are sick, so it is likely better if you just avoid exposing other people      to your germs when you or your kids are sick. When the bladder fills with urine, sensory nerves send impulses to the brain indicating that the bladder is full. The sensory nerves connect with other nerves in the spinal cord to relay this information. In turn, the brain sends impulses back to the bladder instructing the bladder to empty its contents.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Urinary incontinence is loss of bladder control. Symptoms range from mild leaking to uncontrollable wetting. Most bladder control problems happen when muscles are too weak or too reactive. If the muscles that keep your bladder closed are weak, you may have accidents when you sneeze, laugh or lift a heavy object. This is called &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Stress Incontinence&lt;/span&gt;. If bladder muscles become too active, you may feel a strong urge to go to the bathroom when you have little urine in your bladder. This is called &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Urge Incontinence&lt;/span&gt; or overactive bladder. There are other causes of incontinence, such as prostate problems, tumors, prolapsed organs and nerve damage.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dr. &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2"&gt;Chica&lt;/span&gt; will discuss several therapeutic approaches she uses to promote increased control of the pelvic floor muscles and proper function of the &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3"&gt;genito&lt;/span&gt;-urinary and reproductive systems. All organs relate to the higher processes of communication from the brain. Vitamin D triggers the body's immune cells to produce antibodies, which promotes the strength of the immune system. Over 500 studies support Vitamin's D's role in immune health. Other benefits that the nutrient supports are the absorption of calcium for building strong bones and teeth, the maintenance of joint and muscle comfort, as well as the maintenance of a healthy mood.&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Despite available food sources of vitamin D and the body's ability to self-produce this nutrient from sun exposure, vitamin D deficiency is a worldwide health problem, affecting people of all ages. "We continue to see poor Vitamin D levels among the U. S. population, with 70% or more of children and adults having insufficient vitamin D status" (U.S. National Center for Health Statics).&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Optimal levels of Vitamin D (40-80 ng/ml) enhance the creation and functioning of healthy cells throughout the body. In addition to protecting the bones and boosting the immune system, studies show that Vitamin D helps prevent certain cancers, including breast, ovarian, prostate and colorectal.  New research shows that, in the United States alone, thousands of new cases of breast cancer could be prevented every year if more women had optimal levels of Vitamin D. [&lt;span class="Apple-style-span"  style="font-size:small;"&gt;Garland, C.F., et al. 2009 Vitamin D for cancer prevention: global perspective, Ann Epidemiol, Jul; 19(7):468-83&lt;/span&gt;]&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;This study conducted by Cedric Garland and other prominent vitamin D researchers determined that women with Vitamin D levels above 52 ng/ml have half the risk of developing breast cancer as those with 13 ng/ml! Garland (et al) estimates that 58,000 new cases of breast cancer in the United States could be prevented per year by raising vitamin D levels to 52 ng/ml. Imagine what the global impact could be!&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Five years ago, a range of 20-100 ng/ml was considered normal. Just recently, this range was raised to 32-100 ng/ml. Too often women are told that their levels are normal, which is &lt;i&gt;not&lt;/i&gt; the same as optimal.  A simple blood test can reveal your actual Vitamin D level.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;If you're deficient, the best way to boost your vitamin D quickly is to supplement with Vitamin D3. Initially, you may need to take 5,000 IU's or more per day. After establishing a healthy level, supplementing with 1,000 to 2,000 IU's per day may be all that's needed.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Dr. Schoen keeps a close watch on the vitamin D level of her patients.
